Overall Best Oils for Natural Hair

#1 Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is by far my favorite oil to use on my natural curls.  This oil protects against breakage by helping to reduce dryness and will even help to moisturize your delicate tresses.  Jojoba oil is packed with vitamins including, vitamin c, d, and e, which makes it perfect for strengthening hair.

#2 Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is a lightweight oil that can be used on the scalp to combat dandruff.  It is has been known to add shine to the hair while also moisturizing and strengthening hair.  Many people use grapeseed oil to stimulate hair growth.

#3 Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)

Although I am not a fan of the smell of Jamaican Black Castor Oil, there are definitely some benefits to using it on your natural hair. This is a thicker oil that ranges from golden to dark brown in color. JBCO has been an OG staple in the natural hair community for hair growth... especially around the hairline. If your hair is less dense, it is recommended that JBCO is used only 2-3 times a week.  A little will go a long way.  Those with higher density hair may be able to use this oil daily without problem.

#4 Avocado Oil

Avocado Oil

Avocado oils is a great hair oil for most hair types.  This particular oil is lightweight but packs the punch of a heavyweight.  It can penetrate the thickest of hair without the greasy feeling left by some heavier oils.  Avocado oil contains fatty acids, biotin, and other vitamins which makes it ideal for hair repair. Avocado oil also acts as a carrier oil for other essential oils that you may want to incorporate in your hair routine.

#5 Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can have some undeniable positive results for your natural curls.  Coconut oil is a thick oil that can be used to seal your hair's cuticles. This oil helps your hair retain protein, which is great if you hair tends to lack protein.  Although many may swear by this product, I limit my use of coconut oil as too much can result in product buildup and/or hair breakage and loss.  When incorporating coconut oil, you must focus on the needs of your hair, and then use accordingly.

#6 Olive Oil

Olive oil is a thicker oil that can be found in many natural hair products.  When using olive oil in its purest form, it's important to note that a little can go a long way. Olive oil can be used for hot oil treatments, an additive to deep conditioners, and a sealant for moisturizers.  Another added benefit of oil is that it can help to prevent split ends aids in hair retention.

#7 Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential oil is thought to contain properties the increases blood circulation.  When applied to the scalp, it may stimulate hair growth.  The potential for hair growth and rejuvenation makes this essential oil great for natural hair.  Because peppermint essential oil is highly concentrated, it is important to dilute it with another oil such as jojoba oil or even with water.

#8 Argan Oil

Argan oil, also known as liquid gold is often used to care for virgin-hair weaves and wigs, but this oil is also wonderful for natural hair.  This pricey but luxurious oil packs vitamin E, fatty acids, and antioxidants. This combination allows argan oil to serve as a moisturizer, sealant, heat protectant, while also promoting hair growth.  In order to get high quality argan oil, be prepared to shell out some cash.

#9 Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree Oil is an essential oil derived from a special tree in Australia and is not to be confused with the plants that produce drinking tea. This oil is great for reducing product buildup which can pave the way for healthy hair growth.  Tea tree oil can also reduce the occurrence of dandruff by applying to the scalp.  Because this is an essential oil, please be sure to dilute it with almond or grapeseed oil.

#10 Rosemary Oil

Looking for an oil that will not only prevent hair loss but also increase hair growth? Recent studies indicate that Rosemary Essential oil is a great choice. Similar to peppermint oil, Rosemary essential oil appears to increase blood circulation when applied to the hair and scalp.  This may result in strengthened hair follicles and great conditions for hair growth.

Best Oils for Low Porosity Hair

Naturals with low porosity hair will need oils that will penetrate their hair without weighing it down.  Plus one of the goals for low porosity hair is to avoid product buildup, which can stunt hair growth.Because of this, it is best to avoid heavier oils such as jamaican black castor oil, olive oil and coconut oil.  Instead your low porosity curls may cooperate better with the following top oils:

  • Grapeseed oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Almond Oil
  • Splurge: Argan Oil

Best Oils for High Porosity Hair

If your hair is considered to be high porosity or highly porous, then usually the goal is to help your hair gain and retain moisture.  Some recommended oils for high porosity hair include:

  • Jojoba Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Jamaican Black Castor Oil
  • Avocado Oil
